This standard is intended to outline performance guidelines of two-component structural foams used as repair/service materials in the aftermarket. The material may be used for structural reinforcement of body cavities, such as pillars, rails, and other areas where lightweight structural enhancement may be desired. This material may be baffled in order to inhibit expansion into areas of the body cavity where no structural reinforcement is required, or where holes for attachment of trim pieces or other parts are located. While this material yields structural integrity to the existing steel structure, it may not be considered as a main structural component. It must be capable of bonding to e-coated metal and be non-wicking. It must be capable of being dispensed and cured at ambient temperatures.
Typical Applications. Aftermarket repair of automotive bodies.
Remarks. The test procedures and performance requirements contained in this standard are to serve as a template for the structural foam manufacturers, to aid and assist in the accumulation of test data to provide insight as to the acceptability of their use in the above mentioned applications. This specification is a guide, and is not to be construed as a recommendation for this type of repair by GM, its agents, or dealers.
The acceptability of performance of any adhesive systems, evaluated by means of this standard, shall be the responsibility of the Service Technology Engineer, in conjunction with the Design Release Engineer, for the application intended.
