Note: Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.
Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.
Purpose. This standard specifies Environmental/Durability tests and requirements for Analysis/Development/Validation (A/D/V) activities of Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems (RESS) that are used in a vehicle environment to ensure reliability over a life time.
Foreword. This document provides the standard technical requirements for Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems. The Universal Product Code (UPC) and the Functional Name (FNA) for all components shall be obtained from the GM VPPS web site.
RESS UPC and FNA codes will be contained within the following Vehicle Physical Partitioning System (VPPS) sections:
• 846 – Propulsion Energy Storage
• 847 – Propulsion Battery Integration Control Module
• 848 – Propulsion Battery Charging System
A program-specific technical specification that is used in conjunction with this document may include additional program-specific requirements that are not referenced in this document and may supersede any requirements included in this document. In the case of any conflicts between this document and the program-specific technical specification, the program-specific technical specification takes precedence.
Applicability. This standard applies to all Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems for passenger or commercial vehicles and trucks. Hybrid Controllers, Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU), and other internal electrical/electronic components are required to meet GMW3172. Mechanical and climatic loads within GMW3172 may be modified to this standard based on singular mounting strategy within the RESS system. Modifications to GMW3172 test plan must be approved by the GM Validation Engineer and GMW3172 Engineer prior to start of testing.
