This specification covers qualification tests for two types of Branched Coolant Hose Assemblies as follows:
• Type I: Branched Coolant Hose Assemblies using GMW15024 Type G Hose for the Hose Branches of the Assembly.
• Type II: Branched Coolant Hose Assemblies using GMW15024 Type D Hose for the Hose Branches of the Assembly.
The Branched Coolant Hose Assemblies consist of assemblies of straight and/or curved hose which contain connections between the sections of the hose. These connections consist of the protrusion of one length of cured hose or a plastic insert through the cut cover and tube material of a length of cured hose. All cut areas of sections of hose of this intersection are encapsulated in uncured rubber, and this rubber is then cured to give structural support to the area of intersection of the hose and to protect all reinforcement of these hose sections from exposure to and degradation by engine coolant. The encapsulating material may also be plastic to prevent engine coolant contact of the reinforcement. The entire branched hose assembly, made up of these sections of hose and their intersections, is intended to withstand the effects of circulating solutions containing corrosion inhibitors and glycols and operating under the following temperature ranges:
• Type I: -40 ± 150°C
• Type II: -40 ± 130°C
Material Description.
Material Identification.
Hose Construction. All sections of coolant hose used to make up the assembly must meet all GMW15024 Type G requirements for GMW16409 Type I and must meet all GMW15024 Type D requirements for GMW16409 Type II.
Assembly Joint Construction. In the joint areas of the assembly, nylon yarn or plastic inserts may be used for reinforcement. All reinforcement in the joint area, both the aramid reinforcement of the hose and any nylon reinforcement used for joint reinforcement, must be encapsulated by the rubber or plastic of the joint so that no reinforcement is exposed to coolant during operation. The inside of the hose assembly must be smooth, with no flash present within the interior or the hose and no obstructions to coolant flow within the hose assembly. Cover stock of the hose assembly may be perforated to facilitate degassing during manufacturing operations. Assembly shall be black.
Hose Marking. The hose shall be legibly marked with the following information in the sequence stated: GM specification number GMW16409, Type I or II, date of manufacture, hose manufacturer's Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) code identification, and the manufacturing plant location code. Such marking shall be printed parallel to the axis in block letters not less than 3.5 mm high and the open space between the specified markings shall not exceed 300 mm.
Note: Stamped printing that is required to add additional information on the hose, such as part number, broadcast code, installation position, etc., shall be in block letters using the print size specified in Table 1.
The date code shall consist of six digits: the first two digits shall represent the month (01 through 12) of the year, the next two shall represent the day of the month (01 through 31), and the last two shall be the last two digits of the year.
Hoses shall not incorporate colored tracer threads for identifying the hose manufacturer. GM does not permit this method of manufacturer identification.
Parts conforming to this specification which are too short for the marking required in 1.1.1.3 shall be marked as specified by the purchaser's engineering department.
Dimensions and Tolerances. Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, dimensions and tolerances shall conform to those published in GMW15024 Type G (for Type I assemblies) and GMW15024 Type D (for Type II assemblies).
Symbols. Not applicable.
Typical Applications. Not applicable.
