ENGLISH HISTORICAL VERSION

Note: Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.

Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.

Purpose. This test describes the evaluation of brake system performance directly affected by the high thermal strain encountered on an Alpine test with objective measurement and subjective evaluations. Mechanical reliability of the linings, hot wear, vapor lock, fading behavior.

Requirements mentioned in this standard are recommended values, for correct values see VTS.

The Stilfserjoch (SJ) downhill test based at the Großglockner (GG) downhill test. This means that the same linings / rotors / drums to be used.

Two times GG and two times SJ with the same set.

The downhill test shall be performed after time announcement for single bends (one CD for the different downhill times). For correct description of the manner of driving see paragraph 4.4.3.1.

For the test vehicles, the most unfavorable wheels, tires and hubcaps in terms of brake temperatures shall be used.

Foreword. Brake system characteristics are measured while the brakes are subjected to the thermal loads encountered under Alpine conditions (see Figure 1). Heat balance between front and rear brakes is also assessed.

Applicability. This test can be used to evaluate characteristics of an individual component(s) or the entire brake system. This includes cooling behavior and heat conductibility for rims, wheel covers, ABS sensor cables, wheel bearings, studs or nuts (wheel mounting) and drive joints. This test can be used to evaluate the drive joint boot's thermal resistance. The test is also a part of the European total durability test program.

This Test Procedure is for European brake lining characteristics (low met) in combination with DOT4 Brake fluid only (max. allowed brake fluid temperature is +190 °C including soak).

Not applicable with GMNA brake lining characteristics (NAO) and DOT3 brake fluid.

This test is mandatory for region of sales Europe, in combination with GMW14828 (Grossglockner Mountain Schedule for Brakes). GMW14828 is run typically first (low pressure level, slowly heating up of the brake system).
