Purpose/Material Description.
This specification describes Rust Preventative (RP) materials that have been assessed for basic chemical and physical compatibility with Automatic Transmission Fluids (ATF) according to the requirements of GMW16871. See CG4372 for the complete Approved Materials List (AML).

Applicability.
Automatic transmissions and transmission components. This standard does not address the ability of RPs to meet their primary function of preventing or inhibiting corrosion and other storage and handling features commonly assessed for RPs as primary performance properties. Reducing or eliminating contaminants introduced to the final build is optimal. The intent is to design processes that remove all contaminants from components and subassemblies before introduction to the final assembly. RPs included on an AML have only been assessed for the properties defined in the associated screening standard, GMW16871, and as such are not a replacement for a full validation with the contaminant present. A risk assessment should be performed before substituting an AML requirement for full validation. Approval of RPs is specific to the ATF encountered in service.
