This specification details the requirements of a multi-purpose sealer that is high appearance paintable, pumpable, and has improved application capability. This multi-purpose sealer will also be compatible with the three (3)-wet compact painting process which uses waterborne basecoat plus Two-Component (2K) clearcoat topcoat systems. The material is applied in the paint shop after the electrodeposition coating (e-coat) bake, before primer surfacer, and shall be capable of being either manually or robotically applied. The material is intended to seal interior and exterior body joints against water, dust, air intrusion, and corrosion. The material shall be compatible with primer surfacer and topcoat systems.

Purpose/Material Description.

The material shall be a smooth and homogeneous mixture free of air, lumps, unmixed particles, or foreign materials.

It shall be capable of being dispensed with approved and validated production displacement pumping and application equipment including: single point streaming, ribbon tip (flat stream), atomized spraying and automated hem sealing.

It shall not have a noxious or toxic odor in either the uncured or cured state.

In addition, the material shall not adversely affect those personnel handling it.

he material shall adhere to all approved production e-coats. It shall not have corrosion-causing ingredients.

The material shall be capable of bridging varying gap sizes up to 6 mm in size (see 3.1.7).

Multi-Purpose Sealer (MPS).

This material shall meet all specification requirements and shall be used for sealing interior, underbody, and hem (including door, hood, and deck lid hem) seams with the possibility of also being used as an anti-chip rocker/underbody coating on a vehicle body. The sealer may also be used to seal non-exposed roof ditch seams on a vehicle body.

Multi-Purpose Sealer-UV (MPS-UV).

This material shall have UV-resistant properties and shall meet all specification requirements in addition to the exposed roof ditch sealer requirements outlined in 3.2.8.10. This material can be used for all MPS applications outlined previously, in addition to use for UV-exposed roof ditch seams on a vehicle body.

Classification.

Multi-purpose sealers shall be classified by baking system requirements, low bake, three (3)-wet bake, high bake, or powder bake, as described in Tables 2, 3 and 4, and by the material’s UVresistance capability as described in Table 1.

Applicability.

This multi-purpose sealer shall be used for sealing interior, underbody, and hem (including door, hood, and deck lid hem) seams with the possibility of also being used as an anti-chip rocker/underbody coating on a vehicle body. The sealer may also be used to seal non-exposed roof ditch seams on a vehicle body. Only materials approved as sealer type MPS-UV and designated with part numbers 9986694 or 9986695 per material description previously mentioned can also be used as a multi-purpose sealer for UV-exposed roof ditch seams on a vehicle body.
