Purpose/Material Description.

This standard describes the surface appearance and quality requirements for all exterior and interior parts made of carbon fiber composite in a vehicle including GM assembly plant painted parts, supplier painted parts, and exterior add-on parts. The requirements are described in terms of appearance attributes and surface blemishes for each zone of a part based on the customer visibility.

The purpose of these requirements is to ensure that the level of final finish on GM vehicles meets or exceeds the level expected by customers. This standard applies to raw pre-primed parts, primed parts, top-coated parts, and clear-coat only parts, produced and painted by suppliers or GM in assembly plants.

These requirements are in addition to requirements per GMW15777, and relevant material specification (GMW15931, GMW15932, or GMW18688).

Applicability.

Carbon Fiber body panels exterior and interior parts supplied to GM. It includes raw pre-primed parts, primed parts, top-coated parts, and clear-coat only parts produced and painted by supplier or GM. Implementation of this standard applies to all carbon fiber parts effective on the date of publication and forward.

Remarks.

Individual vehicle program teams may move to implement this updated specification on current programs, but the team should consult with Assembly Plants, Supplier Quality, Suppliers, Purchasing and others, as required, to assess cost and other ramifications.
