Purpose.
This standard covers the performance requirements of needle punched non-woven textile parts used in automotive wheelhouse liner and underbody shield applications.
Material.
The specific performance characteristics required for individual parts shall be determined by the GMW16225 callouts specified on the engineering drawing or Math data. These properties are weight per unit area, acoustic absorption level, water pass-through and high heat resistance if applicable.
Example callouts:
• GMW16225, Level S, Class 2, 1200 GSM
• GMW16225, Level P, Class 3, 1400 GSM
• GMW16225, Level S, Class 2, 1400 GSM – H
• GMW16225, Level S, Class 1, 1200 GSM
Note: Weights listed represent average area weight of finished part. Actual weight will vary depending on location on the part. This weight is for the finished part.
Note: Materials used to produce parts shall be approved to GMW16225. If the part contains a protective film (Class 1), the film shall be approved to GMW18419. If the part contains an acoustic treatment (Level P), the treatment shall be approved to GMW14194 with acoustic performance requirement of level C.
Note: The Class 2 or 3 designation determines the thickness of the part; Class 2 is compressed, and Class 3 is lofted. When a component has both Class 2 and Class 3 construction (i.e., front wheelhouse liner) certain tests will be required for both Class 2 and Class 3 parts. These tests are identified in Table 1.
