Purpose/Material Description.

This specification includes standard requirements for approval to GM specifications (GMW specifications, or ASTM D2000 and SAE J200 callouts). This document covers the requirements of approving a new rubber compound, modified compound, changes of a compound mixing process, part molding process, or metal treatment process, etc. A new compound is defined as not currently approved to a GM specification, not used within GM, nor listed in the GM Approved Material Database. Readers should refer to “Section 3 Requirements” and fulfill the requirements accordingly for the specific approval request.

Applicability.

All rubber seals and gaskets supplied to GM and included in parts supplied to GM are applicable.

Remarks.

In GMW rubber specifications, materials are described by the chemical, mechanical, physical, and other properties of the compound test specimens manufactured from the materials. Particular material types are combined in groups according to their chemical structure. These groups differ from each other by the main application, essential additives, and characteristic properties.
