Purpose/Material Description.
This specification covers the properties of epoxy/epoxide resin composites fabricated with discrete, aesthetically chopped and spaced, carbon fiber platelets. The material should be commercially available as a resin impregnated ply, commonly referred to as a pre-preg.
Material candidates may include a scrim or thin backing layer to aid in handling of the pre-preg layer, if the material is produced commercially with such a layer. The handling layer should not be visible once the component is formed and should not lead to added difficulty while fabricating the components.
Adhesive Bonding.
The intended production bonding system (substrate and adhesive) shall meet the requirements of GMW15921 when tested in a laboratory. Production representative parts, and/or assemblies, shall meet the requirements of GMW16185 when tested according to the specification.
Paint.
• For painted applications, the material shall meet the requirements of GMW16172.
• For exposed flaked applications, apply clear coat per GMW15703.
• For body or accent color applications, low bake topcoat per GMW18633-9984901, GMW18634-9984904 should be used.
Symbols.
Not applicable.
Applicability.
A-surface and customer facing layer of the composite component.
Remarks.
The chopped fiber is anticipated to be used for decorative appearance possibly in tandem with structural backing layers of GMW15931 and/or GMW15932 for epoxy carbon fiber components. If used with other layers, the resin system shall be consistent and identical.
Parts that are only created with this chopped carbon fiber prepreg material, GMW18688, can also be created if component requirements are met.
