Purpose.

This test procedure shall be used to determine the horizontal burn rate of automotive materials. Burn rate is determined immediately following an exposure for a short duration to a small flame. The small flame is placed in contact with one (1) edge of the material.

This test procedure defines requirements, testing conditions and reporting requirements for interior raw materials, including but not limited to textiles, leather, plastics, laminates etc. to support the production part conformance to government regulations. Statistical requirements address variability seen in some raw materials including textiles as well as sampling conditions defined in government regulations. Raw materials may be monolithic or multilayered by lamination, bonding, or other processing under the responsibility of the raw material supplier as described in the material specification (e.g., GMW14122, GMW14231, GMW3262, etc.) Such raw materials may be documented in the GM Approved Materials Source list (GMMASL) (e.g., via GM Trim Transmittal) or directly in Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation (e.g., textile/foam laminates).

Part requirements and reporting shall conform to government regulations.

Parts, including GM approved materials that are combined into multilayer composites by bonding, back injection molding, or other manufacturing processes adhering at every point of the intended contact by processing not ascertained in the raw materials specification testing, shall be tested in accordance with GMW18563 when specified in the Statement of Requirements (SOR) or math data file. Examples of parts are seat cushion pad to heater mat, seat vent assemblies, wrapped substrates (adhesively bonded), spacer/topper/plus pad to trim cover, applied noise and vibration tapes or isolators, and other combinations. Testing and certification of parts is the responsibility of the tier one.

Parts that consist of raw materials that are not combined into composites with complete bonding but are superimposed layers, such as trim cover fabric tac sewn to a foam pad, textile wrapped substrates (with only mechanical attachment), or other applications, shall certify the layers independently and may use the raw material data and approval for the Trim Transmittal in the GMMASL.
