This standard presents the format and recording requirements for 19 mm (0.748 in) helical scan digital computer tape cassettes in the DD-2 format. It is based upon the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standards for D-2 cassette case, D-2 magnetic tape and D-2 type helical scan tape drive systems, some of which are referenced.
This standard addresses the physical and magnetic properties of the tape, cassette case, recorded format (track locations, modulation scheme, error correction code, etc.).
This standard was developed by the subcommittee B5 of the National Committee for Information Technology Standards (NCITS) for flexible magnetic media and formats.
This group consists of experienced and qualified specialists on the recording of digital information on magnetic tape.
In the development of this standard, careful consideration was given to current practices, existing equipment and supplies, achieving the broadest possible acceptance, and providing a basis for future improvement in the use of the medium.
