ABSTRACT
It is argued that the minimal requirement for trans granular stress corrosion cracking (TSCC) is a localised dissolution process involving a normal stress. Other factors may be involved which could affect the process, such as hydrogen embrittlement or oxide disruption by slip, etc.,but these are not necessary requirements for SCC. The mechanism proposed is corrosion- (dissolution-) assisted Icleavage', which explains the morphology of the fracture surfaces and the kinetics of cracking, as well as the competitive relationship between strain rate and chemical potential.
