ABSTRACT
Vapour phase synthesis of ceramic powders has attracted much interest in the literature. Most of this has concerned the preparation of very small amounts in the laboratory. Large scale production is, however possible. Tioxide use DC plasma synthesis to make ~ 50,000 tpa of pigmentary titanium dioxide of crystal size ~ 0·2 um. This technology has now been applied to the preparation of ultra-fine oxide and non-oxide ceramic powders. Furthermore, it has been shown that pigment coating technology is an excellent method of distributing additives homogeneously. Coating has led to discernible benefits in terms of sintering and mechanical properties of the fired ceramic.
