ABSTRACT Aluminium alloys are widely used to model new processes and their association with the aerospace industries often places them at the forefront of emerging materials technologies. Moreover, knowledge of microstructure/property relationships is providing opportunities to design alloys to meet specific service requirements, and the underlying principles involved are discussed with respect to six new wrought alloy developments. Three of these alloys are produced by conventional processing methods and three are novel materials requiring new techniques. Comparatively few new titanium alloys have been produced in recent years and attention has been directed more at achieving economies through improved fabricating methods such as creep forming and diffusion bonding. There have also been few developments with magnesium alloys although this situation may change with the expected expansion with the use of these materials for castings in motor vehicles
