Preface

Thispublication contains thepapers from the fourth European Federation ofCorrosion workshop on microbial corrosion organised by the Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon, Portugal in collaboration with the EFCworking party on microbial corrosion.

The purpose of the workshop was to highlight new advances from fundamental aspects to applications in the field of microbial corrosion. Technical progress in experimental, modelling and computational methods were presented. Emphasis was given totopics ranging from mechanistic aspects to the current issues ofbiocorrosion inpotable water orbioleaching ofmetal sulfide ores. Electrochemical, microbiological and metallurgical aspects related to the behaviour of the engineering materials that are susceptible to microbial corrosion were addressed. The characteristics, chemical and physico-chemical properties of biofilms were also presented. The need for 'reference data banks' and the 'future trends in microbial corrosion R & 0' are topics which were discussed during the meeting.

This workshop was broadly divided into five main topic areas:

• (i) mechanisms,
• (ii) biofilm,
• (iii) prevention and control,
• (iv) case histories, and
• (v) other topics, covering in particular bioleaching studies, whose nature is related to the phenomenon of microbial corrosion
