The aim of the Vetronics Infrastructure for Video Over Ethernet (VIVOE) standard is to promote the interoperability of present and future land platform digital video and audio distribution systems. A VIVOE network is used for the distribution of digital video, audio and acoustic data within a Vetronics system, although, as an option, the incorporation of limited data (e.g. audio or video metadata) distribution on the same network may be implemented. However, the standard is not intended to be used to transfer general Vetronics type data on the network and using it to transfer Vetronics data may impact the real-time performance of the video or audio system.

The standard describes the mechanisms and protocols that are employed to facilitate the distribution and control of digital video, audio and acoustic data. The system specified is based on Ethernet as the network technology and all the protocols and mechanisms selected are open, widely used network standards. The standard does not define any new protocols but provides guidance on how the selected protocols and mechanisms are used. For most protocols, the actual standard documentation will need to be consulted to obtain additional detailed information to implement the protocol in an actual system. This Defence Standard is therefore used as the starting point when designing and implementing a VIVOE audio or acoustic data system although, in the event of an inconsistency between this standard and a referenced standard, then Def Stan 00-082 takes precedence.

This part of the standard describes the mechanisms and protocols that are employed to implement the distribution of digital audio or acoustic data over an Ethernet infrastructure. It builds upon and extends the protocols and mechanisms described in Part 1 to allow both audio and video data to be distributed on the same Ethernet network. The protocols and, in particular, the Management Information Base (MIB), have been defined to provide complete backwards compatibility with the previous issue of this standard. This ensures that digital video networks compliant with Def Stan 00-082 Part 1 Issue 3 can also be used to distribute digital audio or acoustic data using this standard.

Not all parts of the standard will need to be implemented for every system. The particular features and functions of the standard that are used for a particular implementation are system-defined on a project by project basis via a valid systems engineering approach.

Purpose

This standard describes the mechanisms and protocols that are employed to implement the distribution of digital audio or acoustic data over an Ethernet infrastructure. It extends the protocols and mechanisms described in the Vetronics Infrastructure for Video Over Ethernet (VIVOE) standard in Part 1 of Def Stan 00-082 to allow both audio and video data to be distributed on the same Ethernet network. The mechanisms and protocols in this standard and, in particular, the Management Information Base (MIB), have been defined to provide complete backwards compatibility with the previous issue of this standard. This ensures that digital video networks compliant with Def Stan 00-082 Part 1 Issue 2 can be used to distribute digital audio or acoustic data using this standard.

The standard includes the provision for multiple service providers (individual audio or acoustic sensor sources) to access the network infrastructure and for multiple service users (data processors) to receive the information from the network infrastructure. The distribution of audio or acoustic data from one service provider to one or many service users is supported.

The fundamental transport protocol used is Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), which allows numerous defined audio payload formats, including both uncompressed Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) audio and the G.711 telephony audio format selected for inclusion in this standard. The protocols selected for inclusion in the standard do not restrict it to just these audio formats, as other RTP audio payload formats can be adopted and added in future versions.

The standard also specifies the methods used to incorporate session control using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the distribution of limited metadata within the audio stream.
