British Defence Standards
This Standard defines the electrical characteristics of four types of discrete signal interfaces for use in avionics systems. This Standard does not replace or override the standardization agreement in respect of STANAG 3837 AA - Aircraft Store Electrical Interconnection System. The basic electrical specification detailed may be enhanced to provide improved electro-magnetic compatibility and protection against lightning or electromagnetic pulse (EMP) induced transients, fault propagation suppression, and other factors where project demands dictate.
Purpose
The purpose of this Standard is to establish uniform requirements in the adoption of discrete signal interfaces. By doing so, it is hoped to eliminate the proliferation of different types of discrete signal interfaces within an aircraft and between different types of aircraft. This should in consequence reduce design times and give greater assurance that discrete signal interface circuits will operate satisfactorily, particularly when transmitters and receivers are procured from different suppliers.
Semiconductor transmitters and receivers with controlled characteristics are specified by the Standard to achieve electromagnetic compatibility as emissions are limited by waveform shaping and susceptibility is reduced by filtering. Electromechanical switching elements are also permitted where specified although emissions are more difficult to control with these interfaces.
