This Part of this Standard discusses both 'structural' and 'functional' anthropometric and their relationship to the design of the workspace.

This Part of this Standard deals with the important concept of body linkages and the use made, by designers, of two-dimensional manikins and computer man-models.

This document also discusses postural stress and the provision of satisfactory working postures. Many military personnel, such as aircrew, wear restraining harnesses which restrict reach and vision still further. This factor is particularly relevant to Helmet Mounted Sights (HMS) whose potential has not been realised due to anthropometric and harness constraints.

The anthropometric data in this Part of this Standard refers to both male and female service personnel.

With much equipment now being produced and procured on a multinational basis, the designer needs to be aware of national differences in anthropometric. Recent US Army anthropometric data has been included here but up-to-date data from other areas such as Europe, was not available at the time of the compilation of data for this Defence Standard.
