PREFACE

The designer faces an ever-increasing demand for products with a performance which must be substantiated under stringent conditions of cost and environment. Assuming the basic skill of the designer, no other single factor can contribute more to the economic preparation of a satisfactory, competitive engineering design than having to hand good reliable design data on the materials being used.

Data on composite materials is available from a variety of diverse sources in Western Europe and the USA. This data is of variable quality and reliability, and its relevance to any specific design is equally varied. For a designer, the task of assimilating usable data before commencing a design can be formidable. Likewise the cost of generating specific data for a design study can be prohibitive, and seriously influence the decision whether to proceed with the use of composites.

The composite materials to be covered by this Handbook consist of; short fibre, long fibre and whisker reinforcement with polymer and ceramic matrices. The manufacturing methods incorporate a range of forming processes including laminating and injection moulding.

This Handbook performs the data assimilation task, and is based on data available to the compiler, evaluated and considered to be sufficiently reliable to warrant inclusion. This has been done with the collaboration of industry, in Western Europe, the USA and Japan.

It shall be assumed that the user of this Handbook is familiar with the processes of composite design,
