British Defence Standards
This part of the Standard details the procedures to be used for the production of the Ship System and Equipment Lists (SS&E Lists) for Vessels with Type 'A' Support and for Vessels with Type 'B' Support..
The SS&E List provides an index to those hull, mechanical and electrical machinery systems and equipments sponsored by the Director Ships, (including control gear, machinery control systems and miscellaneous items), which are to be given Spares Allowances and Parts Identification documentation in the form of PS-IPCs (Type 'A' Support), or Forms 110A, Spare Gear List (Type 'B' Support).
NOTE 1 Miscellaneous items include, valves; flexible pipes, hoses, bellows, shock, vibration or noise isolating mountings, gauges and switches which are not directly associated with machinery control consoles and which do not form part of an 'on- equipment' fit, or of a 'special-to-equipment' but 'off-equipment' panel that is identified in its own right.
NOTE 2 In Type 'A' Support the SS&E List is mainly for MOD internal use, but in Type 'B' Support it forms the Index to a Vessel's Volume of Lists of Spares (Form 110A). IPCs that are applicable to a particular Type A Supported Vessel are identified by a different document, the PIL-IPC Applicability List.
Items relevant to a PS-IPC or Form 110A, and hence to an SS&E List are those identified by an asterisk in the Equipment Code Index of Def Stan 02-54. Both Embodiment Loan Items (ELIs) and Shipbuilders Supply Items (SSIs) are to be listed in the SS&E List.
All items that are the subject of a specific PS-IPC or Form 110A are to be identified in the SS&E List. This requires that for some 'equipments' there will be successive and related SS&E List entries to cater for not only the 'equipment' but also some of its 'assemblies', (those that are the subjects of specific PS-IPCs or Form 110A in their own right).
For all Submarines and for some Surface Vessels that are given Type 'A' Support, 'System PS-IPCs' are produced to identify all items that form each 'fluid system', and to define Spares Allowances for those items. Items in System PS-IPCs which require many of their parts to be identified, will be made the subject of individual PS-IPCs, which will be referred to in the System IPC. All such items are to be identified in the SS&E List.
Many simple items will warrant Parts Identification of only themselves and one or two of their component parts. Such items will be catered for by a 'Miscellaneous Fittings PS-IPC' particular to a Vessel, (if not catered for by a System PS-IPC, where these are used for that Vessel). Such items are to be identified in the SS&E List.
Exclusions from SS&E Lists
Pipes and trunkings and their fittings, (other than valves, strainers, mud boxes, filters, flexible pipes and bellows), are not to be included in the SS&E List unless they are considered to warrant identification and Support by PS-IPCs, or by Form 110A.
Form 110As (suitably retitled) are also used for Lists of Ancillary Support Equipment. The SS&E List is not applicable to those Form 110As.
The SS&E List is not applicable to radio, radar, navigation equipment, weapons or other items sponsored by Director Surface Weapons (Naval), Director Underwater Weapons (Naval), Chief Naval Weapons Systems Engineer, nor to items sponsored by Director General Aircraft (Naval) or the Medical Director General (Naval).
