This NES covers the requirements for arranging and conducting Ship/Weapons Equipment/Systems Inspections, Trials and other Events listed in the Inspection/Trials Programme Parts I to IV, and is applicable to Surface Ships of frigate size and above.
It defines the division of responsibility between the Shipbuilder, the Resident Project Officer (RPO) and other interested MOD Authorities involved for the various Categories of Inspections and Trials.
NOTE 1. The use of the term Shipbuilder is to be applied, as necessary, to the person, firm or company building or converting the ship, whether that be a Prime Contractor, Shipbuilder, sub-contractor or individual, with whom the MOD has a contract.
NOTE 2. Certain MOD contracts will require ship structure and systems to be inspected by a classification society, e.g. Lloyds Register of Shipping.
Annexes D. to G. provide typical lists of activities and events from which each Integrated Project Team Leader (IPTL) can compile a comprehensive list of Part I to Part IV Inspections/Trials required for inclusion in the ship's procurement specification.
Annex H. provides a typical list of activities and events from which each IPTL can compile a comprehensive list of Weapon Inspection/Trials for integration into the Part I to Part IV list detailed in Paragraph 3.
This NES does not include procedures and organizational responsibilities necessary for specifying, authorizing and accepting Tests and Trials in New Construction Ships and Conventional Submarines or conversions by the MOD. These are defined in NES 23.
