As part of the process of gathering and presenting evidence to demonstrate that all verification and acceptance criteria have been satisfied for a procurement project, the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) Integrated Project Team Leader (IPTL) can call on subject matter experts. The Marine Systems Assessment Group, which includes the Machinery Trials and Assessment Unit (MTAU), are an independent trials and assessment organisation within the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO). When requested by the IPTL, they witness, assess and report on inspections and trials of marine propulsion systems. This Defence Standard (Def Stan) specifies the general requirements for the following inspection and trial.

a) Second Machinery Inspection (2 MI);

b) Contractors Sea Trials (CST).

The Machinery Inspection specified in this standard covers all main machinery and auxiliary machinery compartments.
