This Defence Standard (Def Stan) 02–517 Part 2 covers the manufacture and testing requirements of a range of cables insulated with polyolefin based materials, where usage is specific to HM Surface Ships, Submarines and Shore/Underwater applications.

Many cables in this Standard are designed for specific underwater applications. Underwater cables designed for use in conjunction with Pressure Hull Glands and their associated equipments must only be used for underwater applications. Where uncross–linked polyolefins are specified then these cables are only suitable for use at temperatures from –30ºC to +70ºC.

The voltage rating of the cables is as specified in the Tables of Dimensions contained in Annex D.

Cables shall be required to withstand the conditions of reeving, temporary support and glanding into equipment and through bulkheads, that are accepted practices in the Shipbuilding and Ship refitting industry.
