This NES gives details of small commercial electrical fittings and components which are considered suitable for service in marine environments. Where appropriate, equipments have been identified as replacements for similar fittings listed in NES 538. The commercial range of fittings and components are cheaper, lighter and available as ex-stock items.

A range of options is presented from which project engineers and system designers can, in consultation with the Project Manager and Sponsor Section ME312, make a selection that will meet a specific requirement within budget. The pricing of the options available, in comparison with those of NES 538, will give significant cost savings not only at initial procurement but also in through life support of a ship, system or equipment.

This NES applies to equipment sponsored by the Procurement Executive, Ministry of Defence, and supplied by either the Ministry of Defence or the Contractor.
