This NES, in conjunction with the documents referred to herein, specifies the design requirements for Electric Lighting Fittings for HM Ships and Submarines. It also states the environmental conditions in which the fittings must operate and remain fully functional.

It is written with reference to and generally qualifies associated sections in BS 4533 Parts 101 and 102. For convenience the content of BS 4533 Parts 101 and 102 is listed in Annex C showing which sections of the British Standard apply in addition to those in the NES and those sections which do not apply.

The references shown in brackets thus ( ) are the sub clause references in BS 4533 Parts 101 and 102.
