a) This Defence Standard gives details of the minimum requirements for welding and fabrication of surface ships and submarines not in class. The Standard was first issued in 1973, and was updated in 1983. Reflecting the many changes in welding practice that have occurred since then it has been completely revised. The clauses contained within this document constitute the Mandatory Requirements of this Defence Standard; all content that is not regarded as mandatory has been removed and placed in an informative document, MAP 01-004. Information drawn from the MAP 01-004 may be applied to contracts where this Standard is not specified in the contract documents. The mandatory requirements shall be applied to all fabrication and welding of structural steelwork where this Standard is specified in contract documents. To avoid duplication of procedures and to reduce conflicts between Standards, reference is made to BS EN ISO Standards wherever possible. Where the requirements of another Defence Standard are intended to overrule the requirements of this Standard (for example welding of Q1(N) material) it is stated within this Defence Standard.

b) It may be applied to new build, refurbishment or repair as required. Where this Standard is applied to any work on high strength steel for use in submarines the requirements of Def Stan 02-770 shall take precedence.

c) This Standard should not be applied to pipework, ships machinery or other engineering components, for which reference to Def Stan 02-772 should be made.

d) For corrosion resistant cladding or hardfacing weld overlays, the requirements of Def Stan 02-875 should be observed.
