This NES gives the requirements for the preservation and painting of mechanical machinery items except when they are exempt in accordance with Scope 2.
Commercial treatenst will be accepted whenever the standards of painting are considered to be adequate for the particular items in their normal ship environments and the colors of finish and the costs of the treatments are acceptable to the Ministry and their adoption has been agreed to by the appropriate section of MOD(PE), Sea Systems Controllerate, Foxhill, Bath.
Electrical machienry itmes are to be prepared and painted in accordane with NES 507. Whenever possible equipment with both mevhanical and electrical part is to have both parts painted in accordance with NES 507.
For itmes not exempt ( see Scope 2.) the procedures in this NES are to be adopted as soon as can be conviniently arranged with the minimum of disruption to standard production procedures etc, and the minimum of cost.
If an equipment amnufacturer considers the paint systems in this NES unsuitable for his product(s) or that adoption of the paint systems would cause unacceptable disruption or cost, he is to inform the appropriate section of Sea Controllerate accordingly with all the relevant facts and agree with Sea Systems Controllerate the procedure to be adopted.
This NES does not specify whether or not surfaces of equipment casings, carcases, bodies etc, are to be painted. If guidance is required for this the relevant drawings or specifications for the equipment are to be consulted.
