British Defence Standards
This standard specifies requirements for the maintenance and repair of GRP (single skin) structures for ships, boats, craft and structures, including:
To provide standardised repair methods where such have been designed, and
To provide engineering guidance for the maintenance and repair requirements for GRP surface ships and structures (single skin construction). For the specific repair of Small Boats refer to the Design Authority (MWAB-IPT).
The objective governing all recommendations for materials, methods, and procedures is to restore the composite structure to its original level of strength and durability.
Although the environmental and structural requirements of the GRP vessels incorporating composites differ, there are only small variations in the essentials of good repair techniques. The constraints imposed by the various types of repair conditions, ranging from the factory to the shipyard, considerably expand the scope of the guide. The repair methods described for typically repairable damage have been selected to reflect the current requirements of Hunt and Sandown Classes of GRP vessels and take account of recent structural research programmes.
The Defence Standard does not cover:
Survey, report of survey and structural safety certification. This is covered by Def Stan 02-752 Part 1.
Maintenance and repair of sandwich construction. This is covered by Def Stan 02-752 Part 3.
