This NES relates to the requirements for the manufacture, inspection and testing of 70/30 Copper Nickel forgings, forging stock, rods and sections.
Forgings are placed in four classifications. Class 1 to 3 forgings are in descending order of quality assurance requirements. The classes are defined as follows:
Class 1 - A forging whose failure would lead to uncontrollable flooding, the total immobilization of the vessel or serious hazard to personnel;
Class 2 - A forging whose failure would lead to severe but controllable flooding, the serious disruption of weapon systems, main propulsion machinery, or its attendent auxiliaries including generators;
Class 3 - A forging whose failure does not constitute an immediately significant hazard;
Class 4 - Forging stock which can be either hot forged cast billet or hot worked by extrusion or rolling.
Rods are called for in two grades as follows:
Grade 1 - Material for high integrity applications, (eg 1st level system in Nuclear Submarines);
Grade 2 - Normal grade material;
Note: Material below 9mm nominal diameter is usually free from harmful defects. Grade 2 material, (ie not ultrasonically or radiographically examined) will meet most applications for rods and sections below 9mm nominal diameter.
