a) This Def Stan defines the tests to be carried out on equipment or machinery to be installed on HM Ships, Submarines and Royal Fleet Auxiliaries for which structure borne vibration and/or airborne noise testing is required at the following stages:

1) The prototype stage.

2) The initial unit of each production order.

3) The subsequent units of a production order.

4) On refit or repair of a unit.

b) The purpose of these tests is to measure those aspects of manufacturing quality exhibited by structure borne vibration and airborne noise levels. Acceptance of machines will depend on the achievement of acceptance criteria quoted in the relevant procurement specification.

c) The measurements obtained will provide a datum against which production quality can be monitored by making the following comparisons of structure borne vibration and airborne noise levels, when units are tested under the same conditions between:

1) measurements on the same unit at each of the above stages;

2) units of the same type;

3) units of different types.
