This Def Stan relates to the requirements for the manufacture, inspection and testing of high strength copper-nickel-manganese forgings, forging stock, rods and sections.
Forgings are placed in four classifications. Class 1 to 3 forgings are in descending order of quality assurance requirements. The classes are defined as follows:
Class 1 A forging whose failure would lead to uncontrollable flooding, the total immobilization of the vessel or serious hazard to personnel.
Class 2 A forging whose failure would lead to severe but controllable flooding, the serious disruption of weapon systems, main propulsion machinery, or its attendant auxiliaries including generators.
Class 3 A forging whose failure does not constitute an immediately significant hazard.
Class 4 A forging which is used for forging stock only.
Rods and sections are called for in two grades as follows:
Grade 1 Material for high integrity applications (e.g. 1st level system in nuclear submarines).
Grade 2 Normal grade material.
NOTE: Material to this Def Stan must not be used in any application where the temperature exceeds 300 °C. In addition it must be neither welded nor brazed.
