This Defence Standard specifies the procedures, minimum requirements and inspection standards for welding particular grades of cast iron castings for HM Ships (see Clause 6a).

It includes the procedures and requirements for both weld jointing of iron castings to each other and for the weld reclamation of castings with defects generated at the foundry and those defects generated in service (e.g. cracks), using the electric arc welding and oxyfuel fusion based processes (both involving melting of the cast iron in the vicinity of the weld joint). It does not include non-fusion welding by brazing procedures, i.e. where the cast iron is not melted in the joint.
