This Defence Standard gives guidance on the alternatives that are available to replace hexavalent chromium in three categories of protective coating for defence equipment:-

hard chromium plate (see clauses 5 to 8)

chromate conversion coatings (see clauses 9 to12)

chromic acid anodising (see clauses 13 to16)

For each type of coating, the document summarises the attributes and uses of the traditional process, reviews the alternative processes that have been promoted to substitute for the three treatments and provides guidance for alternatives to the traditional processes in defence equipment. Annex A lays down a summary of the health and safety issues and the current regulations for, and restrictions on the use of, hexavalent chromium.
