This Def Stan provides guidance to the designer on the requirements for control and selection of materials, on the basis of their Fire Characteristics, and specifies the aims and procedures by which it is intended to ensure that only authorised materials are fitted in Surface Ships and Submarines.

It identifies and describes the main laboratory type tests that may be required, highlights their shortcomings in relation to a real fire situation and recommends designers to exercise care in making judgements from the test results.

The tests and acceptance criteria stated herein, relate only to the tests undertaken to assess the Fire Characteristics of materials. Other tests, mechanical and chemical, are also required to fully assess the suitability of a material against the stated standard. The requirements of BR1326 Chapter 6 may also be applicable, particularly for materials fitted in closed boat conditions (e.g. submarines).

Parts 2 to 7 of this standard contain a list of assessed materials against the appropriate Main Group headings. Part 8 contains the Fire Test results and Material Data Sheets in an MS Access Database.
