Purpose
The Common Interface Specification (CIS) contains the generic information required by a Combat System Equipment (CSE) supplier to interface an equipment to the Data Transfer System (DTS) via a Coupler. It includes the physical as well as the logical aspects of the interface and covers the protocols for its use. A Coupler can be either physical (typically housed within an enclosure located close to the CSE it serves) or virtualised (executing with the same virtualised environment as the CSE it serves). Any CSE utilising a Coupler (physical or virtualised) as a DTS interface will comply with this specification. In addition, the specific implementation of optional aspects of this specification, together with further detail of the application of this specification to a specific sub-system will be defined in an associated platform specific interface document.
The CIS specifies requirements on the CSE and is expected to be part of the contracted CSE formal specification. Mandatory requirements on the CSE are denoted by the word “shall”. The word “should” is used to describe desirable features. The word “will” denotes features or behaviour of the DTS or other elements of the combat system which are relevant to the CSE. The document places no requirements on the DTS since that is controlled by other documents.
Although the CIS is only concerned with interfacing CSEs to the DTS using Couplers, other mechanisms for interfacing to the DTS are available. Legacy and existing equipment with other types of DTS interfaces are outside the scope of the CIS and covered elsewhere.
The CIS covers only the DTS Coupler interface with the CSE. Internal details of the DTS and its components are not relevant to the CSE.
Most of the detailed information such as addresses, port numbers, message syntax and semantics will be provided in platform specific data management documents. Only those items which are common across equipment and platforms are specified in this document.
This Standard defines the Combat System Equipment (CSE) interface to the Data Transfer System (DTS) using a DTS Coupler and the DTS Common Interface Specification (CIS).
Throughout this standard PTFS refers to a capability, not a particular system or equipment.
