This NES defines a Combat System documentation infrastructure and an associated configuration methodology. Compliance with this NES affords visibility of all the Combat System interfaces on a platform and across platforms and provides both platform and equipment viewpoints of the interfaces. It employs a consistent format for Interface and Link Documentation, necessary for successful configuration management of the Combat System, and it also enables the recording of equipment cabling for each platform.

Interface Documentation is that which specifies:

The data, transmission media and mechanical relationships between the equipment within the Combat System.;

The relationships between each equipment and the platform structure and services (electrical power, chilled water, hydraulics etc.).

Link Documentation is that which specifies the installation of the physical cable connections between equipment, taking into account equipment location and the need for junction boxes.

This complete re-issue of NES 1013:

Provides an overall guide to Combat System Interface and Link Documentation and its use;

Widens its applicability for use throughout the Fleet;

Retains the overall submarine flotilla methodology for use of Interface and Link Documentation and augments it for use by the surface flotilla;

Introduces the Key Code concept which enables an enlarged number of specification categories to be employed;

Introduces the requirement for Dataflow Interface Diagrams, Dataflow Reference Lists and Data Recording Specifications;

Reflects current best practice.

NES 1013, Combat System Interface and Link Documentation, has been restructured and is published in three parts:

Part 1 Management Guide;

Part 2 Interface Documentation;

Part 3 Link Documentation.

The purpose of Part 1 is to provide a stand alone overview of the Combat System documentation structure and its configuration management. Section 1 includes a complete summary of the documentation used and is designed specifically to be a brief introduction to the subject. The remainder of Part 1 contains illustrative examples of the documentation and serves as a lead in to the more detailed contents of Parts 2 and 3.

The purpose of Part 2 is to define Interface Documentation, describe its use, authentication and change control and to provide examples of its format.

The purpose of Part 3 is to define Link Documentation and describe its use, change control and to provide examples of its format.

The documentation infrastructure may be used in full or in part and may be adopted retrospectively. New build platform contracts may specie use of complete package, or the Interface Documentation only with an alternative MOD approved commercial method of Link Documentation. A legacy platform may have its existing specifications, certificates and wiring schedules integrated with NES 1013 platform level documentation to gain the benefits of Configuration Management.

Provision of appropriate Interface and Link Documentation is a criterion for configuration management examined in the Fleet Weapon Acceptance of both equipment and Combat Systems.

The first usage of any defined term (as listed in Annex B, paragraph B2) in the main body text of this Standard is shown in italics.
