This NES specifies the requirements for the medium dependent physical formats to be used for all data recording on board ships and submarines for in service operational use. It has not taken Naval Aviation or Marine Engineering systems into consideration. It does not cover the needs for loading of software into a weapon system.

This NES:

a. defines the standards to which media used in naval data recording is to conform;

b. defines the standards for physical formatting of media to which media and recording equipment is to conform;

c. recommends a number of physical media and formats appropriate to a number of typical Naval applications;

d. identifies media and formats that may be used but which are not recommended for future systems;

e. recommends a suitable standard interface for recorded data and control interfaces to recording devices;

f. identifies a number of manufacturers and their products which claim conformance to the specified standards;

g. summarizes, for each specified standard, the characteristics of the media and equipment.

Annex A identifies, for a variety of Naval Applications, the most appropriate media and equipment for those applications.

Annex B lists the typical characteristics of media and equipment meeting the indicated standards for a variety of parameters.

Annex C lists manufacturers and products which are claimed to meet the indicated standards.

The following types of recording facility are covered by this Standard:

a. digital data recording using the following media:

(1) tape cartridge (longitudinal and helical scan methods);

(2) tape cassette;

(3) flexible disk cartridge (floppy disk);

(4) optical disk;

(5) Winchester disk (removable hard disks);

(6) reel to reel digital magnetic tape;

(7) reel to reel analogue tape (HDDR type);

b. high speed cine film equipment;

c. audio tape and cassette recording equipment;

d. video recording equipment.

This NES specifies standards for recording equipment intended for the recording of data for Operational Analysis purposes. It is strongly recommended however that recording equipment for other purposes (eg trials , acceptance and special purpose recording) conform to this NES.
