Def Stan 21-88 is primarily concerned with functional integration. It applies to Combat System components and systems which comprise elements from all levels of the architectural stack (i.e. application software to hardware) and which are linked, directly or indirectly, to other such systems. Def Stan 21-88 does not cover physical integration onto the warship platform. As shown in Figure 2, functional integration activities are inextricably linked with other integration activities which will have their own processes.
