This Defence Standard shall apply to all Land Vehicles. The definition for a Land Vehicle shall encompass all components and ancillary systems which form an integral part of the safe operation of the Land Vehicle. This should include:

a) Headsets or headgear which provide active or passive attenuation of noise; and

b) Electronic communication systems which provide safety-critical information, representing a source of noise.

This Defence Standard focuses on the protection of all personnel using the Land Vehicles as operator or crew. It aims to achieve this via generation of robust evidence base, including noise data and contextual information, to enable noise exposure assessments and adequate control of noise for hearing protection in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (CNAWR) and JSP 375 Volume 1 Chapter 25 – Noise at work.

The Land Vehicle shall be designed and operated so that crew members can effectively communicate with each other and other units without removing any required hearing protection devices.

The following are outside the scope of this Part:

a) Feelable vibration;

b) Noise from multiple Land Vehicles in a combined force group;

c) Noise from sources that are not part of the Land Vehicle seeking certification but may be present in its intended operating environments (e.g. generators, machinery);

d) Noise impacts and effects on or from the wider environment, or on members of the public, which should be managed in accordance with JSP 418 Management of Environmental Protection in Defence;

e) Effects of noise on the personnel which are not explicitly covered by this Part, for example metabolic, cardiovascular, nuisance/ annoyance, sleep disturbance, other psychological effects, acoustic fatigue, task concentration, performance and productivity;

f) Acoustic signatures and detectability of Land Vehicles, including any vulnerability related hazards that arise as a consequence of the noise emissions. For further guidance on this issue, reference should be made to Def Stan 08-006 Part 2 – Counter-Surveillance Requirements;

g) Effects of noise, vibration and shock on mechanical, electrical, electronic systems and components;

h) Noise arising from incoming weapons; and

i) Noise arising from Land Vehicle accidents or fault conditions that are not representative of the Land Vehicle in a normal in-service state.
