British Defence Standards
Structural Integrity is the ability of a structural item to be fit for purpose without breaking or deforming excessively under normal operational conditions and remains safe even when conditions exceed that of the original design.
This Defence Standard applies primarily to light and medium weight Land Vehicles. It covers the structural strength elements considered to be specific to the military application or not covered by recognised civilian vehicle standards (for example Regulation (EC) No 2019/2144) and general engineering good practice.
All military vehicles intended for use on the road shall comply with applicable UK and International legislation. Military vehicles shall also comply with legislative requirements of other countries as specified by the user requirement.
Exemptions from legislative requirements shall only be permissible in exceptional circumstances following legal scrutiny.
Military vehicles, wheeled or tracked, are not within the scope of vehicle Type Approval regulations and are only subject to The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 as amended, The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 as amended, and the Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations 1998 as amended.
Military vehicles not fully complying with the relevant sections of these regulations due to operational requirements are classified as a recognised category under Article 53 of the Road Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (General) Order 2003, which states: An operational military vehicle must be certified by the Secretary of State as being a vehicle, or type of vehicle, which for operational reasons cannot comply in all respects with such of the regulations mentioned in [1.2.5] as are specified in the certificate.
All equipment procured will comply with statutory safety requirements and regulations. The design of the equipment shall minimise the risk of a hazardous occurrence and consider the requirement of DSA 02: DLSR Policy and Regulations for Health, Safety and Environmental Protection and Def Stan 00-056.
