MODUK DEF STAN 61-005: PART 6 PDF

This standard defines the characteristics for all military (ground) Platform DC power distribution and Equipment within the military vehicular environment. It includes all supply sources with a nominal voltage of 12V and 24V irrespective of whether these are derived from an on-board engine driven generator, a separate auxiliary power unit (APU), power import, battery or combinations thereof. Power export characteristics are also defined in the standard. The guidance in referred standards applies up to 1000A continuous current; above this value cable calculations need to reflect the higher amount of energy.

The standard includes a main section, which covers Scope, Related Documents, Abbreviations and Definitions, Requirements, Platform Applicability, Format, Power Control Plan, Evidence Requirements, Power Reviews, Capacity, Non-Compliant Equipment to Def-Stan 61-005 Pt 6, Batteries, Circuit Protection, Wiring Configurations, Centralised Load Dump Suppression, Connectors, Earthing, Platforms, Equipment, Environmental, Quality Standard, Test Equipment, Electrical Legislation and Management and Planning.

Figure 1 shows diagrammatically how Annexes A, B and C of this standard to applies to the Platform and Equipment of a military vehicle. The detailed technical requirements of the annexes are as follows:

a) Annex A defines the power distribution system and its required characteristics to be provided at the electrical distribution socket outlets;

b) Annex B defines the constraints that the Equipment shall meet, including its added cabling to the distribution socket outlets;

c) Annex C defines the constraints that solid state switching devices for power distribution and circuit protection shall meet;

d) Annex D defines Cable Capacity De-Rating Factors and includes example cable calculations;

e) Annex E and Annex F include example documents for a Power Control Plan and Accreditation/Evidence Review for an LRU;

f) Annex G includes guidance on integration of one and two wire systems.

By application of these tests and compliance with the defined limits, the electrical interoperability of Equipment, including communications and other non-Platform electronic/electrical systems, with the Platform power systems should be ensured.
