British Defence Standards
This standard specifies cables, electrical, PVC insulated, manufactured in metric units and having cores with plain copper conductors, to be used in commercial road vehicles for Ministry of Defence use.
This Standard does not specify cables for use in combat vehicles.
Tables-I(A),to I(C) inclusive list the standard range of cables electrical, from which, selection should be made for the wiring of extra accessories - Or the replacement of faulty cables. In all cases, reference should also be made to BS AU7 'Automobile series chart and colour code for vehicle wiring'.
Information relating metric dimensioned cables to their superseded imperial dimensioned counterparts is given-in the Tables. The dimensional differences between them are considered negligible. As the metric cables may therefore be used to replace the imperial items, this Standard does not contain a Table II. This being the first issue of a Defence Standard listing metric cables for use in commercial road vehicles no Table III has been included. Users should note, however, that the current trend towards the use of only PVC insulated cables in commercial road vehicles has resulted in a number of the cables listed in SSM(L) 10-7, Part 8, which this Standard supersedes, having, no metric counterparts in BS 6862 'Cables for vehicles', Part I.
The cables listed in Tables I shall be in accordance with the general requirements of BS 6862' Part I. This Standard has been prepared to provide a selection of cable sizes and colours which should be sufficient for the purposes stated in clause 3.
