This Defence Standard specifies enamel insulated round winding wires and non-insulated tinned copper wires for Ministry of Defence use.

Table 1 lists the standard range from which selection shall be made for all new design requirements for non-insulated tinned copper wires.

Table 2, Table 3 and Table 4 list the standard ranges from which selection shall be made for all new design requirements for enamel insulated round said winding wires.

For maintenance purposes use shall be made of remaining stocks of the imperial sized wires listed in the imperial/metric cross reference at Annex A. This Standard does not, therefore, include a table which normally specifies "items which are to be used only for maintenance purposes". When stocks of imperial sized wires are exhausted the metric sized wires of this Standard shall be used, the appropriate sizes being ascertained by reference to the Table of Annex B.

This being the first issue of a Standard listing metric dimensioned wires of the types referred to in sub-clause 1.1, it does not include a table listing items which are "no longer to-be provisioned".

This Standard is to be invoked in all tenders and contracts, for the items in Table 1 to Table 4. Any items supplied must be wholly in conformity with its requirements. For codification purposes, this Standard is to be listed among the reference data for all items in Table 1 to Table 4.

This Standard has been prepared because there is no suitable national or any other Standard acceptable to the Ministry of Defence available.

This Standard has been agreed by all authorities concerned who are to implement it from its date of issue.

If this Standard should be found unsuitable for a particular requirement, the Director of Standardization shall be informed of the circumstances. Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation to tender or contract in which it is invoked should be addressed to the Quality Assurance Authority named in that invitation to tender or contract.
