This Defence Standard provides the user of lithium batteries with information and procedures that will promote the safe usage of lithium batteries. It defines the conditions needed for bulk and unit storage of lithium batteries and the packaging and restrictions applicable to road, sea and air transport (civil and military) of batteries including those associated with, or contained in, equipment's.

The Standard also gives methods for the disposal of used or unwanted batteries and provides information on the extinguishing of fires involving lithium batteries.

This Standard applies only to non-rechargeable and rechargeable ambient temperature lithium batteries,

It does not apply to molten-salt electrolyte (thermal) lithium batteries.
