This Defence Standard specifies requirements for gluconic acid, in the form of a 30% solution in water, intended for addition to caustic soda lye for the in-situ preparation of alkaline cleaning and de-rusting baths. The resulting alkaline sodium gluconate solution is suitable for use on ferrous metals and such non-ferrous metals as copper, nickel and certain of their alloys.
