This INTERIM Standard specifies requirements for five grades of lacquer that may be used on components in contact with explosives. The grades are:
1.1.1 Grades 1.0 and 1.1. The brushing/sealing grades may be used as a sealant for paper, an adhesive for textiles (including gunpowder-primed textiles) and a gap bridging lacquer for sealing small holes, eg mouth sealing of certain small arms ammunition.
1.1.2 Grade 2. The spraying grade is used when this method of application is preferred to brushing.
1.1.3 Grades 3.0 and 3.1. The dipping grades are for application by needle-dropping onto the surface of initiating or detonating compositions and, by dipping, onto detonators made of brass, copper or aluminium.
The lacquer is normally available either clear or red.
The designation 'Type QX' indicates that the material is of a quality likely to be suitable for application where a high degree of compatibility with explosives is a requirement. However, its compatibility with all explosives in all environments has not been established and Design Authorities should seek advice on particular applications from the Superintendent, NP2, RARDE .
