This Standard relates to a black butyl rubber mix designated Type MD which is primarily intended for the manufacture of moulded items, such as ear pads on headgear assemblies.

The designation Type MD indicates that the material, when correctly vulcanized, is suitable for use in applications involving contact with the skin. The choice of ingredients used in the manufacture is therefore controlled (see clause 4), and special processing precautions are specified (see clause 6).

Material complying with this Standard has good resistance to outdoor exposure, particularly ozone attack, and is the preferred material when such resistance is a primary consideration. It is satisfactory for use throughout the temperature range -45 °C to +70 °C. It is not resistant to mineral oils and greases; where contact with these materials is likely, chloroprene rubber complying with DEF STAN 93-25 is to be preferred.
