This Def Stan specifies the material and performance requirements for specialised armour quality steel castings for the protection of crew and mechanism of AFVs against attack. In particular, it covers the procurement of armour castings for which superior ballistic qualities are required and/or for which through-section hardening is achieved, either by air-cooling or by oil-quenching.

It includes a requirement for suppliers to validate their proposed material production route and for the assessment of product quality by ballistic and other tests of pre-production or prototype castings. The quality of production shall be assured by quality control, inspection and testing procedures defined in a Process Control Schedule (PCS).
