The purpose of AAP-5 is threefold:
to assist readers who do not have access to NATO Terminology Database (NTDB) via the NTMS to understand the most commonly used abbreviations in NATO documents and publications.
to encourage authors of documents to apply a number of basic rules when crearing or using abbreviations.
to list mainstream abbreviations used in NATO, including those that have undergone a process of standardization in accordance with reference B.
